Trimodal and rail siding
A site connected to road, rail and inland waterway.
Trimodal sites allow goods to shift to the cheapest or lowest-emission mode depending on volume and destination. A private rail siding is rare and valuable for heavy or bulky goods.
Benefits
At trimodal locations, bulk goods, containers and heavy loads can be shifted to rail or inland waterway, while final distribution is by truck. This reduces costs and emissions over long distances and makes supply chains more resilient to road congestion.
Due diligence
A rail siding is only valuable if it is operational, infrastructure agreements are in place and service by a railway operator is secured. For waterways, quay areas, handling equipment and dependence on water levels count. Low water can severely restrict capacity at times.
