Logistics Region Rhine-Neckar
Rhine-Neckar, around Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg, is one of the strongest industrial and logistics locations in south-west Germany. Where Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse meet, trimodal infrastructure combines with an exceptionally strong industrial base.
Location and access
Rhine-Neckar lies between Rhine-Main, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Saarland. Six motorways link the region to the national and European networks. The Mannheim marshalling yard is one of Germany's largest, and the ports of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen are among Europe's most important inland ports.
Demand
Ludwigshafen is one of the largest chemical sites in the world. Pharma, machinery, agricultural technology and automotive add to it, and Germersheim hosts one of the automotive industry's largest spare-parts warehouses. Retail and contract logistics serve southern and south-west Germany, and hazardous goods logistics is in strong demand.
Clusters
Mannheim, with its port, Friesenheimer Insel and marshalling yard, is the logistics centre. On the left bank of the Rhine lie Ludwigshafen, Frankenthal and Worms. Speyer and Germersheim have become locations for large warehouses. On the Hesse side, Lampertheim and Viernheim offer further space, as do Hockenheim and Walldorf to the south.
Outlook
The transformation of chemicals and automotive changes space requirements, for example through energy efficiency, circular economy and hazardous goods storage. With free land scarce, redevelopment and densification gain importance. The trimodal infrastructure remains a strong argument.
