Uses and logistics models
Central warehouse
A company's main warehouse serving a large area, often all of Germany or Europe.
Central warehouses consolidate stock in one place and reduce storage costs. They usually sit centrally to sales territories near motorway junctions, for example in central Germany.
Consolidating inventory
A central warehouse holds a company's entire range in one place. This reduces safety stock and simplifies control, but lengthens routes to distant customers. In Germany, many central warehouses are located in the middle of the country, for example in northern Hesse, East Westphalia or Thuringia, because large parts of the population can be reached within a day from there.
Requirements
Central warehouses are usually large, tall and designed for efficient storage, often with very narrow aisle or high-bay technology. Grid connection, expansion land and long lease terms play a greater role than for smaller regional warehouses.
