Logistics Region Erfurt/Thuringia
Thuringia lies at Germany's geographical centre. From Erfurt, companies reach large parts of the country within a day, with land available and rents below those of the western German conurbations.
Location and access
The A4 and A71 meet at the Erfurt interchange, and the A4 and A9 at the Hermsdorf interchange. Erfurt is a central ICE rail hub, and GVZ Erfurt has an intermodal terminal. Leipzig/Halle cargo airport is about an hour away.
Demand
Major online retailers run fulfilment centres in Erfurt that serve all of Germany. The automotive industry is present with the Eisenach plant and many suppliers, and battery technology is produced at the Erfurt interchange. Optics and photonics in Jena and the food industry broaden demand.
Clusters
The Erfurter Kreuz estate near Arnstadt is one of Thuringia's largest industrial and logistics locations. GVZ Erfurt concentrates distribution and intermodal traffic. Gotha and Eisenach on the A4 stand for automotive and distribution logistics, and the Hermsdorf interchange, Gera and Jena offer further space to the east.
Outlook
The shortage of land in top western German regions is pushing national distribution centres to the middle of the country. Battery and supplier industries create demand for production-related logistics. New projects rely on ESG standards, solar power and energy efficiency.
