Logistics Region Upper Rhine
The Upper Rhine runs along the A5 from Karlsruhe via Rastatt and Offenburg to Freiburg and the Swiss border. Vehicle manufacturing, electrical engineering and machinery drive demand, while Rhine ports, the Rhine Valley Railway and proximity to Strasbourg and Basel make the region part of the corridor between Rotterdam and Genoa.
Location and access
The region follows the Upper Rhine valley between the Black Forest, the Palatinate and Alsace. The A5 is the continuous north-south axis from Frankfurt to Basel, the A8 branches off at the Karlsruhe interchange towards Stuttgart and Munich, and the A65 from Ludwigshafen ends at Wörth opposite Karlsruhe. An east-west motorway is largely missing. By throughput the Rhine ports of Karlsruhe are the largest port in Baden-Württemberg, and there are container terminals in Karlsruhe, Wörth, Kehl and Weil am Rhein. The Rhine Valley Railway is part of the Rotterdam–Genoa freight corridor and is being upgraded, with the Rastatt Tunnel due to open at the end of 2026.
Demand
A large car plant in Rastatt and one of Europe's major truck plants in Wörth attract suppliers and production logistics. Electrical engineering, machinery, metals, steel and the paper, glass and rubber industries complete the industrial base, and food retail central warehouses add distribution. Logistics providers and wholesale are less strongly represented by comparison. Demand focuses on small and mid-sized buildings, and large distribution centres have only appeared in recent years.
Clusters
In the north, Karlsruhe with its Rhine port and oil port plus Wörth and Kandel on the Palatinate side form the largest focus. Rastatt, Muggensturm and Bischweier on the A5 and Baden-Airpark near Rheinmünster follow to the south. The Ortenau has Offenburg, the Kehl Rhine port opposite Strasbourg and Lahr airfield with a large business park. Freiburg, Neuenburg and Weil am Rhein complete the region at the Swiss border.
Outlook
Rhine floodplains, flood protection and settlement pressure limit new land in the valley, so brownfields are gaining importance. In Bischweier a large consolidation centre for the vehicle industry has been built on such a site. Upgrading of the Rhine Valley Railway, cooperation between the ports of Kehl and Strasbourg and the long-planned second Rhine bridge between Karlsruhe and Wörth strengthen the location. New buildings rely on ESG standards and solar power.
