Logistics Region Danube
The Danube region follows the river from Ingolstadt via Kelheim and Regensburg to Straubing and Deggendorf and reaches the A92 with Landshut and Dingolfing. The car industry and its suppliers shape the market, while trimodal Danube ports and intermodal terminals link road, rail and waterway as far as south-eastern Europe.
Location and access
The region lies in eastern Bavaria between Nuremberg, Munich and the Austrian border. The A3 runs from Nuremberg via Regensburg, Straubing and Deggendorf to Passau and Linz, and the A93 links Regensburg with the A9 towards Munich and north to Weiden and Hof. The A92 runs from the A9 near Munich via Landshut and Dingolfing to Deggendorf, where it meets the A3 at the Deggendorf interchange, and Ingolstadt lies on the A9. From Kelheim, where the Main-Danube Canal joins the river, the Danube is a federal waterway all the way to the Black Sea. The ports of Regensburg, Straubing-Sand and Deggendorf are trimodal hubs, and the nearest cargo airport is Munich.
Demand
The car industry dominates: large vehicle plants in Dingolfing, Regensburg and Ingolstadt attract suppliers, sequencing and contract logistics. Electronics, semiconductors and mechanical and plant engineering in the Regensburg area add to this. Around Straubing, agricultural trade and the bioeconomy shape port use, while Deggendorf focuses on metals, heavy cargo and specialist engineering. Retail and distribution play a smaller role than in the metropolitan regions.
Clusters
Regensburg, with bayernhafen, the freight village and the intermodal terminal in the east of the city, is the centre, complemented by Neutraubling, Obertraubling and Barbing on the A3. Ingolstadt with its freight village forms the western pole, and Landshut and Dingolfing with their supplier parks the southern one on the A92. In the east lie the industrial park with the Danube port of Straubing-Sand, plus Deggendorf and Plattling where the A3 meets the A92.
Outlook
The region offers more room than Munich and Nuremberg, but demand depends heavily on the car industry and its shift to electric mobility. A new intermodal terminal opened in Straubing-Sand in 2025, and a heavy-lift terminal has been announced. Upgrading of the Danube between Deggendorf and Vilshofen begins in 2026, the A3 has six lanes between the Regensburg interchange and Rosenhof, and the Regensburg interchange is being rebuilt until around 2031.
