Uses and logistics models

Fulfilment centre

An e-commerce warehouse handling storage, picking, packing and dispatch to consumers.

Fulfilment is labour- and technology-intensive. Mezzanines, conveyors, many staff, large welfare areas and high power demand are typical. Returns need their own space.

Processes

Fulfilment covers goods-in, storage, picking of individual items, packing, shipping and returns processing. Small orders mean many touches per item, so staff and conveyors account for a large share of costs.

Space requirements

Mezzanines for picking, a high grid connection, daylight, generous welfare areas, ample car parking and good public transport access are required. Seasonal peaks, for example at Christmas, call for additional space and staff.
