Building and structure
Mezzanine
An intermediate floor inserted into the hall.
Mezzanines create additional space for picking, packing, returns or offices without enlarging the footprint. They may be built in or retrofitted as steel platforms and must be approved structurally, for fire safety and for escape routes.
Types
Fixed reinforced concrete mezzanines are planned with the building and usually accessed via the office block. Steel platforms are installed later and can be removed at lease end. For picking and conveyors, loads, column positions and connection to lifts or vertical conveyors are decisive.
Permits and fire safety
A mezzanine changes the usable area, escape route lengths and often the sprinkler design, because the area beneath must also be protected. It therefore usually requires a permit. Without one, it can jeopardise insurance cover and use in an emergency.
