Uses and logistics models
Cross-docking
Transhipment without storage: goods arrive, are sorted and loaded out immediately.
Cross-dock buildings tend to be narrow and long, with doors on both sides and plenty of staging space. Storage height matters less than door count, yard area and 24-hour operation.
Process
In cross-docking, incoming shipments are sorted by recipient and loaded onto outgoing vehicles with no or only brief interim storage. This requires precise control, reliable arrival times and clear staging logic. Typical users are groupage forwarders, retailers and network operators.
Building type
Cross-dock facilities are elongated with doors on both sides and large staging areas between the rows of doors. Height is secondary; what matters is the number of doors, yard depth, parking for swap bodies and permission for night operations.
