Dock ratio

The ratio of doors to warehouse area.

A common rule of thumb for standard warehousing is about one dock door per 1,000 m² of warehouse space. Throughput-heavy uses such as cross-docking or parcel hubs need far more doors, long-term storage fewer.

Dock ratio and throughput

The dock ratio is a quick indicator of how much throughput a building can handle. More meaningful is a calculation based on planned vehicles per hour, dwell time per vehicle and shift pattern. This gives the number of doors needed at peak times rather than on average.

Expandability

New builds often include provisions for additional doors, such as knock-out wall panels and prepared pits for dock levellers. This significantly increases flexibility when the occupier changes.

Typical values

Warehousing
around 1 door per 1,000 m²
Cross-docking and parcel
1 door per 300 to 500 m² or more
