- Truck court
Loading and yard
Truck court
The yard in front of the doors where trucks turn and dock.
For articulated trucks to manoeuvre and reverse onto docks safely, the truck court needs sufficient depth, generally at least around 35 m in front of the dock doors. Tight yards cause waiting times and damage to doors and vehicles.
Dimensions
An articulated truck is up to 16.5 m long and needs a clear area in front of the door for reversing that goes well beyond its length. Two-way traffic in a single-sided yard increases the requirement. Space for swap bodies, waiting vehicles and the fire brigade must also be kept free.
Operations and safety
Separate entry and exit, one-way traffic and marked pedestrian routes reduce the risk of accidents. Car parking should not be located in the truck yard. Yard lighting, drainage and heavy-duty paving are part of the basic specification.
