Freiburg / Weil am Rhein
The southern Upper Rhine runs from Freiburg through the Markgräflerland to the tri-border area near Basel. The A5 with links into France and Switzerland, the Weil am Rhein Rhine port and proximity to Basel and Alsace make the submarket a location for cross-border distribution, customs logistics and e-commerce.
Location and access
The A5 runs through the submarket from Freiburg to the Weil am Rhein/Basel motorway border crossing, with Freiburg served by the Nord, Mitte and Süd junctions. At the Neuenburg interchange the Rhine bridge to Chalampé leads to the French A36 towards Mulhouse, and at the Weil am Rhein interchange the A98 branches off via Lörrach to the Hochrhein interchange, from where the A861 reaches the Swiss A3 at Rheinfelden. The Weil am Rhein Rhine port has a container terminal handling barge, rail and truck traffic, and the EuroAirport lies on the French side. A new freight railway is being built along the A5, with groundbreaking in May 2026.
Space profile
Freiburg's Industriegebiet Nord covers about 300 hectares between the Freiburg-Nord and Freiburg-Mitte junctions, and the Hochdorf business park about 120 hectares with forwarders, a mail centre and manufacturing some two kilometres from the A5. South of Freiburg the inter-municipal Gewerbepark Breisgau has been developed on the former Bremgarten military airfield. In Neuenburg am Rhein a large e-commerce logistics centre right on the A5 has been operating since 2025, with a second under construction. In Weil am Rhein forwarders, customs and warehousing providers cluster around the Rhine port and the border.
What occupiers should consider
Free land in Freiburg itself is scarce, while Gewerbepark Breisgau and the Markgräflerland municipalities on the A5 offer more room. If you deliver into Switzerland, allow for customs clearance and waiting times at the border, as Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union; proximity to customs agents in Weil am Rhein is an advantage here. Wage competition from jobs in Switzerland makes recruitment harder, which should be considered for shift operations.
