The Ortenau around Offenburg, Kehl and Lahr lies on the A5 between Karlsruhe and Freiburg, directly opposite Strasbourg. The trimodal Kehl Rhine port, large business sites at Lahr airfield and an industrial economy make the submarket the gateway to Alsace.
Location and access
The A5 links the Ortenau with Karlsruhe, Freiburg and Basel. Via the B28 and the Europe Bridge, Strasbourg is only minutes away, and the B33 runs from Offenburg into the Black Forest. Offenburg is a junction of the Rhine Valley and Black Forest railways, and the Kehl Rhine port is connected to the border station and operates a container terminal.
Space profile
The Kehl Rhine port covers about 320 hectares with steel, paper and engineering companies. Lahr airfield has about 280 hectares of industrial and business land around the runway right on the A5, where several logistics providers are based. The inter-municipal Gewerbepark Raum Offenburg and the business parks along the A5 offer mid-sized buildings.
What occupiers should consider
If you also supply Alsace and Strasbourg, the border location is an advantage, but plan driving times across the Rhine bridges realistically. The A5 is heavily congested at peak times. Large contiguous plots are mainly found at Lahr airfield, while space in the Kehl port is tight.
