Fire access road
The drivable area around the building for emergency vehicles.
Large warehouses must be accessible for the fire brigade, often via a perimeter road of sufficient width and load capacity. These areas must not be permanently blocked.
Requirements
Under the German Industrial Building Directive, industrial buildings with a footprint of more than 5,000 m² must have a perimeter route accessible to fire engines. Width, curve radii and load capacity follow the model guideline on areas for the fire brigade and state requirements. Set-up and movement areas must be kept free at all times.
Practice
In use, the perimeter route is often blocked by parked trailers, containers or pallets. This is a typical finding at fire inspections. Extensions must preserve the route, which limits the buildable area.
