Heating and heat pumps

Conditioning warehouse and offices without fossil fuels.

Many warehouses are kept frost-free only, others are heated to working temperature. Heat pumps, often combined with solar, increasingly replace gas radiant heaters. Cold stores can reuse waste heat.

Systems

Warehouses use air-to-air heat pumps, air-to-water systems with underfloor heating or radiant ceiling panels. Underfloor heating in the slab uses the large thermal mass but must be planned at construction. High buildings and frequently opened doors increase heat demand.

Regulatory framework

The German Building Energy Act generally requires a high share of renewable energy for newly installed heating systems. For existing buildings with gas heating, this creates new requirements on replacement. Combined with photovoltaics, operating costs and emissions can be reduced significantly.
