Uses and logistics models

Cold store

Temperature-controlled storage for food, pharma or chemicals.

Cold stores need insulated envelopes, refrigeration plant, underfloor heating against frost, airlocks and a high grid connection. Converting a dry warehouse is complex, so existing cold space is in particular demand.

Temperature ranges

A distinction is made between chilled areas at around 2 to 8 °C, ambient-controlled areas for pharmaceuticals and confectionery, and frozen storage at around minus 18 to minus 25 °C. Multi-temperature warehouses combine several zones with air locks and separate doors.

Technology and refrigerants

Refrigeration plants increasingly use natural refrigerants such as ammonia or CO₂, because fluorinated refrigerants are being phased down under the EU F-gas regulation. Ammonia systems above certain charges require an immission control permit. Under frozen zones, floor heating prevents the subgrade from freezing and heaving.
