Fire water retention

Structural measures that contain contaminated firefighting water.

Where water-hazardous substances are stored, firefighting water must not flow freely into soil or sewers. Retention is achieved with upstands, recessed areas, tanks or shut-off valves. Missing retention can cost the permitted use or insurance cover.

Basis

The state firewater retention guidelines require containment once substances hazardous to water are stored above certain quantities, staggered by water hazard class. The required volume is calculated from stored quantity, compartment size and firefighting concept.

Structural solutions

Common solutions include recessed floors with upstands at doors, automatic barriers, shut-off valves in the drainage and retention basins in the yard. In existing buildings, retrofitting is often complex because falls and drainage must be altered.

Typical values

Firewater retention thresholds
WHC 1 from 100 t, WHC 2 from 10 t, WHC 3 from 1 t
