Water hazard class (WGK)
German classification of substances by their risk to water, from WGK 1 to 3.
Storing water-hazardous substances requires compliance with the AwSV ordinance, including sealed surfaces, containment and inspection duties. The higher the class and quantity, the stricter the floor and retention requirements.
Classification
Substances are classified as non-hazardous to water, generally hazardous to water or in water hazard classes 1 (slight), 2 (obvious) and 3 (severe). The classification is stated in the safety data sheet and published by the Federal Environment Agency.
AwSV hazard levels
Class and quantity determine the hazard level A to D of a facility. This sets requirements for containment, surface sealing, notification of the authority and expert inspection. In logistics buildings this frequently concerns chemicals, cleaning agents, oils and food additives.
