Fire safety and security
Battery storage
Storage for lithium-ion batteries and battery-containing products.
Lithium-ion batteries can self-ignite and are difficult to extinguish. Depending on quantity and state of charge, insurers and authorities require separate areas, distances, adapted sprinklers and concepts for damaged cells. Returns are particularly critical.
Risk and standards
Lithium-ion cells can enter thermal runaway through mechanical damage, overcharging or manufacturing defects, a self-reinforcing reaction that releases gas. Insurers refer to VdS 3103 and FM Global Data Sheet 8-1. Quantity, state of charge, packaging and whether the goods are new, returns or damaged are decisive.
Structural responses
Common measures are separate fire compartments, limited storage blocks with spacing, adapted sprinkler design with in-rack sprinklers, gas detection and an outdoor area for suspect goods. For investors, a building's suitability for batteries is increasingly a criterion for letting to e-commerce, automotive and electronics occupiers.
