Industrial Building Directive (MIndBauRL)

German building regulation guideline for fire protection in industrial buildings.

The model Industrial Building Directive sets minimum fire protection requirements for production and storage buildings, such as compartment sizes, fire resistance of components, escape routes, smoke extraction and areas for the fire brigade. The federal states adopt it as a technical building regulation, sometimes with variations.

Safety categories

The directive distinguishes safety categories K1 to K4 according to fire protection infrastructure: no special measures, with a fire alarm system, with a plant fire brigade, or with comprehensive automatic extinguishing. The higher the category, the larger compartments may be for the same fire resistance.

Verification methods

Besides the simplified method with tabulated values, the directive allows a calculation method under DIN 18230-1 that takes account of fire load and heat extraction. Fire safety engineering methods are used for special cases. The method chosen determines the scope for later changes.
