Fire safety and security

Fire compartment

A section of a building separated by fire walls to contain a fire.

Large warehouses are divided into fire compartments whose permitted size depends on the German industrial building guideline, the safety category and the fire protection systems. Compartments determine which areas can be let independently and where fire doors sit.

Sizes under the Industrial Building Directive

Under the German model Industrial Building Directive, the permitted size of a fire compartment depends on the safety category and the fire resistance of the components. With a comprehensive automatic extinguishing system (safety category K4), considerably larger compartments are permitted. Even larger areas can be justified with the calculation method of DIN 18230-1 or an engineered fire strategy.

Fire walls and openings

Fire compartments are separated by fire walls that are carried above the roof or protected by roof details. Openings such as doors and conveyor penetrations need approved fire closures that shut automatically in a fire. These closures require regular maintenance and in practice are often blocked by goods.
