Smoke and heat exhaust (SHEVS)
Openings and devices that release smoke and heat in a fire.
Smoke and heat exhaust keeps escape and firefighting routes clear and protects the structure. In logistics buildings it is usually provided by roof vents opening automatically or manually, with inlet openings in the facade.
Natural and powered
Natural smoke vents open flaps in the roof and release smoke by buoyancy, with inlet air through doors or facade openings. Powered systems extract smoke with fans and are used where roof openings are not possible or effective. Design follows DIN 18232 and the fire strategy.
Interaction with sprinklers
In sprinklered buildings, smoke vents are often delayed or opened manually by the fire brigade so that sprinklers act first. This control logic must be described in the fire strategy and maintained during alterations.
