Building and structure
Daylight and rooflights
Openings in roof and facade for natural light.
Rooflights and light strips improve working conditions and reduce electricity for lighting. German workplace rules (ASR A3.4) generally require daylight and a view outside for permanent workstations. Rooflights often also form part of the smoke and heat exhaust system.
Occupational safety
Under German workplace rule ASR A3.4, permanent workstations should receive sufficient daylight and a view outside wherever possible. In large warehouses this is achieved with light strips, rooflights and facade windows. For picking and packing stations, daylight measurably improves concentration and well-being.
Interaction with roof and energy
Rooflights are often also smoke vents, maintenance openings and a weak point of the roof membrane. They limit the area for photovoltaics and add heat in summer. In new builds, coordinated planning of daylight, smoke vents and PV layout pays off.
