Uses and logistics models

Last-mile logistics

The final leg of the supply chain to the consumer.

Last-mile sites are in or right next to cities. They are smaller, often with level access doors, charging for electric vans and room for cargo bikes. Space is scarce and existing buildings are frequently converted.

Challenges

The last mile is the most expensive part of the supply chain. Short distances to customers reduce costs and emissions, but require space in locations where housing, offices and retail compete for the same land.

Types of space

Smaller buildings in industrial estates on the urban fringe, converted existing properties, car parks and ground-floor units are used. Level access doors, charging points for electric vans, noise protection and access routes approved for delivery traffic are important.
