ESFR sprinklers
Early Suppression Fast Response: ceiling sprinklers with high water volume and fast activation.
ESFR sprinklers aim not just to control a fire but to suppress it early. In many cases they allow high storage without in-rack sprinklers, which makes racking changes more flexible. They require sufficient water volume and pressure.
Operating principle
ESFR sprinklers activate quickly and discharge large droplets at high flow, which penetrate the fire plume to reach the seat of the fire. The aim is early suppression rather than control alone. This requires high pressures and water volumes, and therefore larger pumps and tanks.
Limits
ESFR is tied to maximum storage and ceiling heights, specific rack types and unobstructed water paths. Obstructions below the ceiling, solid shelves or certain plastics can rule it out. Batteries and aerosols are subject to separate requirements.
