Racking

The storage equipment, usually pallet racking, in the hall.

Racking is generally owned by the occupier. It must suit the grid, floor load, sprinklers and escape routes and is inspected regularly. Changing racking can require changes to fire protection.

Rack types

Besides pallet racking, shelving for small parts, cantilever racking for long goods, flow racking for fast movers and drive-in racking for homogeneous goods are common. The choice depends on product range, turnover and access principle.

Inspection and responsibility

Racking must be inspected regularly by a competent person, in practice usually annually under EN 15635. Impact damage to uprights must be assessed and repaired immediately if necessary. The lease should state whether racking belongs to the building, who inspects it and whether it is removed at lease end.
