Energy and ESG
DGNB, BREEAM and LEED
Systems for certifying sustainable buildings.
Certificates assess energy, materials, location, operation and process quality. For institutional investors and many corporate occupiers they form part of ESG reporting. DGNB is widespread in Germany, BREEAM and LEED internationally.
Assessment logic
DGNB assesses environmental, economic, sociocultural and technical quality, as well as process and site quality, across the life cycle. Awards are Platinum, Gold, Silver and, for existing buildings, Bronze. BREEAM and LEED use their own criteria and levels that are internationally comparable.
Benefits and limits
A certificate makes it easier to let to corporates with sustainability targets and to obtain green financing. It does not replace consumption data, however. Investors increasingly request actual energy and emissions figures to demonstrate taxonomy alignment and decarbonisation pathways.
