Uses and logistics models
Multi-storey logistics
Logistics buildings with several serviceable levels, often with truck ramps.
Where land is scarce, levels are stacked. Trucks reach upper floors via spiral ramps, or loads are moved by lifts. Structure and floor loads are considerably more complex than in single-storey halls.
Access
Multi-storey logistics is accessed either via truck ramps to the upper levels, giving each level its own doors, or via goods lifts and conveyors with loading only on the ground floor. The first option takes more land, the second limits throughput on upper levels.
Economics
Construction costs, structure and fire protection are considerably more demanding than for single-storey buildings. Multi-storey concepts therefore pay off mainly where land is scarce and expensive, such as port and big-city locations. The number of completed projects in Europe is still limited.
