Building and structure

Floor flatness

The permitted deviation of the floor surface from a flat plane.

General tolerances under DIN 18202 are sufficient for standard warehouses. Very narrow aisle storage with tall racking and guided trucks requires much stricter values under DIN 15185, otherwise loads sway and vehicles must slow down.

Standards and measurement

DIN 18202 sets general flatness tolerances in building construction. For very narrow aisle warehouses with guided trucks, DIN 15185 Part 1 applies, limiting height differences across and along the wheel tracks. Measurements are taken along the future travel paths rather than across the whole floor. High-bay warehouses follow the stacker crane manufacturer's specifications, which can be even stricter.

Effects on operations and cost

Uneven floors force trucks to slow down, strain masts and wheels and increase risk when storing at height. Remedies include grinding the wheel tracks or a new topping. Both cost time and money and should be agreed with the owner before signing.
