Roof load capacity
The roof's structural reserve for additional loads.
Many older warehouses are lightweight and have little reserve for solar panels, plant or green roofs. New builds are often designed with a PV load reserve.
Design loads
Roofs are designed for self-weight, snow, wind and possibly plant. PV systems add loads depending on the system, more with ballasted flat-roof systems than with mechanically fixed ones. Loads from ventilation units, sprinkler pipes or conveyors suspended from the roof structure also count.
Assessment
A structural engineer checks the available reserve using the original calculations or a survey. Light steel structures from earlier decades often have little reserve. Strengthening is possible but changes the economics of a PV project considerably.
- Additional PV load
- often around 10 to 25 kg/m²
